Mount Shasta's Spini sets all-time NSCIF wins record

Mount Shasta senior Kayla Spini stepped into the Northern Section record book Wednesday when she earned her 90th high school career pitching victory.

Mount Shasta High School senior Kayla Spini is now the Northern Section record holder for career pitching victories.

Spini won her 89th and 90th games Wednesday at  Central Valley. She struck out 21 in 10 innings and allowed just 6 hits as the Bears won twice, 13-1 and 14-1.

Shasta Cascade League champion Mount Shasta had 29 hits in the two games and improved its Division 5 leading record to 27-3.

The Bears are scheduled to finish their regular season with a doubleheader Friday at Sacramento Valley League co-champion Willows (13-12).

Mount Shasta will be the No. 1 seed in the playoffs and will open with a home game Tuesday, May 15. Softball playoff brackets are scheduled to be set Saturday.

The Bears have won four SCL?championships during Spini’s career and have a 45-3 league record in that span.

Spini is 90-14 in her career, while the Bears are 94-22-1, including a 2-5 record when she was unable to play in 2011 while recovering from knee surgery.

She has struck out more than 1,000 batters at an average rate of 1.5 per inning.

Spini allowed 6 hits and 1 earned run at Central Valley, while the Bears’ offense had a field day.

Sejay Sarti had 5 hits and scored 5 runs in the doubleheader; Paige Hough had 4 hits including a double, scored 4 runs and drove in 4; Kathryn Andrus had 3 hits and 4 runs batted in. Ashley Cain had 4 hits and Alex Peruzzi 3.

Spini, who leads the Northern Section with 12 home runs, singled and doubled and drove in 2 runs in game two.
