College of the Siskiyous defeated Riverside, 5-4, Friday evening to advance to the semifinals at the CCCAA State Championships in Bakersfield.

The North's No. 1 seed in the Final 4, Siskiyous is scheduled to face South No. 1 Cypress Saturday at 5:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the championship round in the double-elimination tournament.

Two time defending state champion Cypress defeated North No. 2 Sierra, 9-7, in Friday night's other first round game.

Sierra and Riverside are scheduled to play an elimination game at 3 p.m. Saturday, and the winner will play the loser of the Siskiyous-Cypress game at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Anna Miller, Siskiyous' Northern California Pitcher of the Year, had some control problems early in Friday's opener and the Eagles made some fielding miscues that led to Riverside taking a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning.

The Eagles' first run came on Miller's home run in the bottom of the second. They scored 3 more to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run double to the fence in left-centerfield by Tre Sullivan and an RBI single to the right of second base by Stephanie Lascelles.

Another Siskiyous fielding error allowed Riverside to tie it at 4-4 in the fourth inning, but Miller struck out the cleanup hitter with the bases loaded for the third out.

Siskiyous scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning on a single by Shelby Burke, sacrifice bunt by Lydia North and single to center by Sullivan that was misplayed by the centerfielder.

Miller was nearly untouchable after that, although she did give up a lead-off double in the seventh. She finished with 14 strikeouts and 5 walks and improved her record for the season to 23-2.
