Kids in first through sixth grade are invited to register, beginning this week, for the Mt. Shasta Recreation District's annual Youth Basketball program, starting Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Sisson Elementary School gym.

All south county kids are invited to participate, according to a press release from the District.

Heading up the coaching team this year are Jake West and Kale Riccomini. Assisting will be members of the Mount Shasta High School Bears varsity teams.

First and second graders will be led through a four-week instructional clinic on Saturday mornings through February 9. Clinic times will be 9 to 10 a.m.

The clinic will focus on basic skills and drills to introduce the younger kids to the sport.

Fee for the program is $30 per player, and all participants will receive a program t-shirt.

The basketball program for third through sixth graders gets underway on Saturday, Jan. 19 with the first two Saturdays devoted to skills and drills.

A five-week recreational league for the older children is set to begin on Feb. 2. Clinic times for the third and fourth grades will be 10 to 11 a.m., and for the fifth and sixth graders, games will be held from 11 a.m. to noon.

League games will be played Feb. 2 through March 2 on Saturday mornings and early afternoons.

Players will be contacted by phone prior to the first scheduled game and a game schedule will be distributed at the gym on Feb. 2.

The first league game will be played at the Mount Shasta High School gym with the remaining four weeks of games at Sisson.

Family and friends are invited to fill the bleachers each Saturday to cheer the kids on during the exciting game action, according to the press release.

The MSHS varsity players will coach individual teams and player jerseys will be supplied by the Recreation District. The fee for the third through sixth grade program (clinic & league) is $40 per player, which includes a program t-shirt.

Registration forms have been distributed to local schools and will be accepted through Friday at the City Park Recreation office or in person at the Sisson gym on Jan. 19 from 9 a.m. to noon. Pre-registration is not required.

Registration will close on Saturday, Jan. 26.
