Three-time Siskiyou Open champion dethroned, Bicego gets hole in one
Weed's Matt Dawson was dethroned after three years as the champion of the Siskiyou Open at the Weed Golf Club by Palm Desert's Adam Marshall, who traveled to Weed specifically to compete in the tournament Aug. 14 and 15.
"All the competitors toughed out a hot, humid and smoky two days, whilst retaining their fine golf, sense of humor and good partying," said the club's Dolph Marshall.
Marshall shot a 136 (68, 68) to beat Dawson, who shot a 139 (72 67) with a closing nine holes of 31, coming up just short in the 56th Open over the weekend.
Gary Groppi shot a 137 to edge out Dolph Marshall (138) for the Net division.
Rob Bicego got the tournament off to a great start with his first ever hole in one on hole 9 from 181 yards.
How Marshall did it
Dawson was going after his fourth win in a row. With over 15 single digits in the field, it was going to be a tough four-peat. After day one, Adam Marshall had a four-stroke lead after shooting a stellar 68. Dawson knew he had to go low on Day 2. A few missed putts on the front nine and a 36, he realized it may take a 29 to retain the championship.
He almost did it, coming home in 31 strokes for a 67 on Day Two.
While Dawson was tearing up the back none on Sunday, Adam Marshall was on cruise control. His only hiccup was a bogey on the intimidating par 3 Hole 4, but bounced back with a great birdie on 5 to settle the nerves. After shooting another 68 on Sunday, Adam Marshall took home his First Siskiyou Open.
Adam Marshall said he will be ready to defend hit title and is planning on making the long trip from the Coachella Valley.
On the net side, Gary Groppi played a super back nine on both days to just beat Dolph Marshall with a score of 137 to 138.
The full results of the 56th Annual Siskiyou Open will be posted at weedgolfcourse.com, by Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 17.
"Thank you to all who participated and volunteered to keep this great tradition going," said Dolph Marhsall. "Mark your calendars for the 57th playing of The Siskiyou Open, August 12th, 13th and 14th, 2022."
