The Mount Shasta High School Competition Cheer Squad placed first in Redding’s Northstate Cheer Competition and fourth in the Bring it On Battle of the Locals in Chico over the weekend.

Freshman Kristine Lujan placed first in the Individual Jumper division in Redding, and junior Alicea DiPillo took third in jumps and second in the Individual Tumbler division.

“It was an amazing weekend for us, we have never competed before and are looking forward to raising funds to be able to travel to other competitions to represent our town and high school,” said coach Sherri Degraffenreid.

The team consists of 10 girls: freshman Marisa and Megan Melo, Kristine Lujan, Kiersten Barham and Salena Ishikawa; sophomore Cinthia Carillo; juniors DiPillo and Margot Stevens; and seniors Paige Hough and Jhena Turner. Degraffenreid is assisted by Mickayla Husa.

The Bring it On Battle of the Locals Competition “was much higher level where we competed against large schools with teams double to triple in size to us,” said Degraffenreid. “We placed fourth in this competition and Alicea and Kristine both received honorable mention in the Individual Jumper Competition.”

The competition squad will be busy with fundraisers this month, said Degraffenreid.

“Currently we are selling wreaths from the Dawson Wreath Barn and will deliver the wreaths the weekend of Thanksgiving. Also, we will be celebrity baggers at Ray’s Food Place in Mount Shasta the day before Thanksgiving, and selling bread bowls full of chili and clam chowder at the community tree lighting ceremony on Nov. 29.
