The Mount Shasta Bears will play for the 2018 Northern Section Division 4 baseball championship on Saturday, May 19, at 1:30 p.m. at Shasta College in Redding.

The championship game will pit the No. 2 seeded Bears (16-5) against No. 1 Winters (29-1), the three-time defending section champion.

Shasta Cascade League champion Mount Shasta reached the section title game by winning two one-run playoff games on its home field May 11 and May 14.

A two-run home run by Myles DeLeon helped the Bears jump out to an 8-1 lead after two innings of their semifinal against No. 3 Colusa.

Colusa then scored 3 runs in the third and three in the fourth to cut the lead to 8-7, which is how it ended thanks to the three shutout innings of relief pitching by junior Hunter Stock.

In a close playoff opener against No. 7 Willows, the Bears came out victorious, 1-0.

Playing their first home playoff game since 2016, the Bears scored the game’s only run in the first inning. Freshman Kekai Ferguson led off with a towering double toward left field that fell 20 feet short of leaving the ball park. Later in the inning, junior Kaden Riccomini singled to bring Ferguson home.

Riccomini also pitched for the Bears, shutting out Willows on 6 hits and one walk while striking out 10.

The Bears got players on base, but weren’t able to capitalize after the first inning. They had 10 hits and one error and left 8 runners on base.

Senior Kaimana Ferguson went 2 for 3 with a double in the fourth inning and junior Kole Riccomini went 2 for 2 against Willows.

Colusa came to Mount Shasta Monday after winning a high scoring first round playoff game on their home field over No. 6 East Nicolaus, 17-8.

DeLeon went 2 for 3 against Colusa with 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored.

Gage Kinkade was 2 for 2 with a triple, RBI and run scored.

Kayden Crisci doubled twice, drove in a run and scored a run.

Kekai Ferguson had 2 hits, including a double, and scored twice.

Nolan Johnson doubled and drove in a run, Kaden Riccomini went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Kaimana Ferguson drove in a run and scored a run.

Stock earned the save after striking out 3, walking 1 and allowing 3 hits and no runs in 3 innings of relief pitching.

Starting pitcher Ian Allen went 4 innings and allowed only 4 hits, but struggled with his control and walked 7.

Sac Valley League champion Winters, which had a first round bye, defeated No. 5 seed University Prep in the semifinal round, 8-2.

Mount Shasta goes into Saturday's game with a 14-game winning streak. Winters has won 20 in a row.
