Section championship game next for Mount Shasta girls
The Mount Shasta High School girls basketball team will play for the section championship Friday night in Oroville after defeating Hamilton 56-37 in Tuesday night’s semifinal in Mount Shasta.
After falling behind 12-11 in the first quarter, the Bears outscored Hamilton 12-7, 18-8, and 15-10 in the next three quarters.
The win was the 21st in a row for the Bears (24-4), who have a chance to win their school’s third girls basketball section championship ever and first since 1992.
No. 1 seeded Mount Shasta is scheduled to play No. 2 Durham (20-7) in Friday night’s championship game at 6 p.m. at Butte College.
Durham, which has won the last three NSCIF Division 5 championships, defeated No. 3 Fall River Tuesday night, 51-47.
Mount Shasta played big and fast against Hamilton, finishing with 32 offensive rebounds, 55 total rebounds and 18 steals.
Junior Kacey Cain had 13 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots.
Senior Abby Manley scored 7 points with 11 rebounds and 5 steals.
Sophomore Abby Andrus scored 9 points with 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Junior Emily Andrus scored 5 points and led the Bears with 10 offensive and 13 total rebounds. She had 3 assists.
Junior Samantha Benedict scored 6 points and 9 of her 10 rebounds were after Bears’ misses. It was her seventh game in a row and 14th this season with double digit rebounding.
Freshman Lily Hitchcock had her best offensive game of the season with 9 points.
Kaycee Sarti made one of the Bears’ three 3-point baskets and scored 6 points.
Abby Andrus and Hitchcock also made 3-pointers.
Senior Mary Taylor had 4 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
Junior Tyyler McKnight scored a point and had 2 rebounds.
