Bears, Miners, Cougars are first round Holiday Tournament winners

The Mount Shasta Bears girls team (in white) defeated Fort Bragg 42-25 in the final game on the first day of the Holiday Tournament Thursday night in Mount Shasta.

The boys and girls teams from both Mount Shasta and Yreka won first round Holiday Tournament games Thursday, and the Weed boys defeated Klamath Union, 61-57, to set up a Friday night game against the Miners.

Weed’s girls were scheduled to play the first game of the day Friday morning at 9 a.m. against Etna after both lost on Thursday.

The annual tournament is scheduled to continue throughout the day Friday and Saturday in Mount Shasta High School’s Robert E. Novo Gymnasium.

Other girls games on Friday are Butte Valley vs. Fort Bragg at 10:30 a.m., Yreka vs. Lassen at 4 p.m., and Klamath Union vs. Mount Shasta at 5:30 p.m.

In the boys bracket, Etna is scheduled to face Klamath Union at 1 p.m., Bear River vs. Butte Valley at 2:30 p.m., Yreka vs. Weed at 7 p.m., and Hidden Valley vs. Mount Shasta at 8:30 p.m.

A three-point shootout is scheduled for Friday at noon.

Mount Shasta’s boys had no problems in a 78-30 win over Butte Valley Thursday night, while Hidden Valley defeated Bear River, 56-40.

On the girls side, the Bears outscored Fort Bragg, 27-13 in the second and third quarters on the way to a 42-25 win in Thursday night’s Holiday finale.

Savanna Reynolds led the Weed girls with 11 points in a 66-24 loss to Lassen, while Victoria Arnett scored 7, and Christine Bangert 5.

The Yreka girls defeated Etna, 48-38, and the Yreka boys defeated Etna, 60-36.

Klamath Union’s girls team scored a 53-13 win over Butte Valley.

The Weed boys trailed Klamath Union 44-42 after three quarters but won it with a 19-11 closing run.

Junior Xavia Martinez and sophomore Angel Nicholas scored 15 points each for the Cougars, Harley Williams and Danny Formhals 11 each, and Jason Ross 6.

Seven Mount Shasta boys scored between 7 and 12 points in their landslide win on day one: Kody Bauman 12, Kole Riccomini 11, Anthony Gore 11, Kaden Riccomini 10, Dillon Ward 10, Ernie Maumasi 8, and Gavin Paisely 7.

Abby Andrus scored 16, Lily Hitchcock 14, and Taryn Linares 7 for the Mount Shasta girls, who went on a 14-0 run starting with about a minute and a half left in the first half to take a 28-14 lead that grew to 35-19 by the end of the third quarter.

Hitchcock made 4 three-point baskets, and Andrus was effective driving to the basket.
