Mount Shasta High School’s boys and girls cross country teams both won Shasta Cascade League championships by narrow margins over Trinity last Wednesday on West Valley High School’s cross country course in Cottonwood.

The Mount Shasta boys finished 3 points ahead of Trinity, while the girls’ margin of victory was 6 points.

Two Bears brought home All-League patches: junior Marissa Bonivert, who finished 2nd in the girls race, and sophomore Griffin Hamann, who placed 3rd in the boys race.

Mount Shasta coach Dusty Miller said junior Ialee Hering was out-kicked at the finish line and missed the final girls All-League slot by less than a second.

Miller credited the boys’ success to a group of freshmen who moved up to the varsity level to fill the required five positions for team competition. Freshmen Adam Domanski and Zach Hoskins finished 6th and 7th overall within 6 seconds of each other, while Josh Bonivert finished 13th in his first varsity race.

The girls team included Maybelle Benda, Kimberly Rubio, Darian DeBortoli, and Ashlyn Moyer. Zoe Becker, a transfer student from Germany, ran the third fastest time for the MSHS girls, but her finish was not included in the scoring.

The boys team included Chris Rees, Clark Otrin and Mason O’Sullivan.

The MSHS teams will be competing Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Northern Section Championships on the same West Valley High School course. The Section Championships will determine which teams and athletes will qualify to compete in the State Meet on Nov. 25 in Fresno.
