Bears sweep Burney Monday for 3rd straight SCL softball title

The Mount Shasta High School softball team won a third consecutive Shasta Cascade League championship by sweeping Burney decisively Monday in Burney, 8-1 and 16-1.

Mount Shasta finished 11-1 in league, improving its three-year SCL run to 34-2 and ending the 2016 SCL season ahead of Fall River (10-2), Etna (8-4), Modoc (5-6-1), Burney (5-7), Trinity (2-10), and Weed (0-11-1).

The Bears had 33 hits in Monday’s doubleheader, while pitchers Leslie Rhoades and Jolene Rhoades limited the Raiders to 5 hits.

The Bears made 2 errors in both games. Burney made 2 errors in the first game and 3 in the second.

Leslie Rhoades pitched a seven-inning complete game in the opener, allowing 4 hits, striking out 6 and walking 2.

Kacey Cain and Kaycee Sarti went 3 for 5, and Sydney Cross was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 walks.

Leslie Rhoades, Jolene Rhoades and Quincie Cross had 2 hits each; Miranda Zanni and Mary Taylor had 1 hit each.

Jolene Rhoades pitched a five-inning one-hitter in the second game, striking out 9 and walking 1. She and Cain both went 4 for 4 at the plate, and all 4 of Cain’s hits went for extra bases: 3 doubles and a triple.

Sydney Cross was 3 for 4 with 3 doubles, Lily Hitchcock was 2 for 2, and Quincie Cross, Taylor, Leslie Rhoades, and Bella Powers had 1 hit each.

Prior to Monday’s wins, the Bears (now 13-5-1 overall) were ranked No. 5 on the most recent Northern Section Division 5 playoff points list behind Colusa (19-6), Biggs (18-7), East Nicolaus (17-7) and Durham (16-7).

The softball playoffs seeding meeting is scheduled for Saturday, with first round games to be played Tuesday, May 17; semifinal games Thursday, May 19; and the championship game Saturday, May 21.
