Weed, Dunsmuir win volleyball playoff openers Tuesday night

Weed and Dunsmuir both won first round Northern Section volleyball playoff matches Tuesday night and advance to play in the quarterfinal round Tuesday, Nov. 13.

The postseason win was the first ever in volleyball for Weed, the No. 7 seed in Division 5. The Cougars hosted and swept No. 10 Portola, 25-18, 25-13, 25-17.

Weed (17-10 overall) now advances to face No. 2 Los Molinos (33-7-1) Tuesday at Los Molinos. Los Molinos placed third in the Five Star League, behind Mercy and University Prep. Weed placed fourth in the Shasta Cascade League behind the three teams that tied for first, Mount Shasta, Fall River, and Modoc.

Evergreen League champion Dunsmuir, the No. 8 in Division 6, went back and forth against No. 9 Redding Adventist before securing a 3-2 win Tuesday night in Dunsmuir.

The Tigers lost the opener, 24-26, won the next two, 25-17, 25-20, then lost the fourth set, 20-25.

Set 5 was a nail-biter before the Tigers won it, 16-14.

Dunsmuir (13-5 overall) moves into the quarterfinals to face No. 1 Mercy (26-10) Nov. 13 in Red Bluff. Mercy won the Five Star League championship ahead of University Prep (10-2) and Los Molinos (9-3).
