Mount Shasta and Dunsmuir earn volleyball playoff spots

The Northern Section volleyball playoff brackets were released today, showing Mount Shasta as the No. 6 seed in Division V and Dunsmuir No. 12 in Division VI.

Dunsmuir is scheduled to open at No. 5 Redding Christian Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Mount Shasta has a first round bye and is scheduled to open the following Tuesday, Nov. 19, at No. 3 Trinity, which also has a first round bye.

The Bears were the only team to defeat Trinity during the 2013 Shasta Cascade League season. Trinity won the league championship with an 11-1 record; the Bears and Fall River tied for second at 9-3.

Mount Shasta defeated the Wolves in Weaverville, 3-0, on Oct. 17. It was the Bears' third win in an eight match winning streak that is ongoing.

The Bears also lost to Trinity, 3-2, in their first league match of the season Sept. 24 in Mount Shasta.

Los Molinos is the No. 1 seed in Division V, which has 10 teams playing in a 16-team bracket. Durham is the No. 2 seed.

Dunsmuir went 7-3 and finished second to Tulelake (10-0) in the Evergreen League.

Redding Christian placed third in the Five Star League with an 8-4 record, behind Los Molinos (11-1) and Mercy of Red Bluff (10-2).

Fall River is the No. 1 seed in Division VI, Maxwell is No. 2.

The Dunsmuir-Redding Christian winner will advance to play a second round match Nov. 19 against either No. 4 Mercy or No. 13 Big Valley.
