Smoke from wildfires on other parts of Siskiyou County obscured the sun Friday evening as seen from Weed, Calif.

Citing safety concerns, organizers today canceled the 2014 Tinman Triathlon, a day before the event was scheduled to be held at Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort.

“It was not an easy decision,” said event co-director Dr. Jack Haling.

The decision to cancel was made, Haling said, because of concerns about smoke in the area from wildfires in other parts of Siskiyou County and low water levels in Lake Siskiyou that could cause swimmers to encounter stumps, rocks or other debris.

Smoke has been an issue in the Mt. Shasta area periodically for several weeks. It has been thicker and more persistent the past few days.

“We have no way of knowing what it will be like tomorrow,” Haling said.

Saturday evening’s event spaghetti dinner will be held at Lake Siskiyou beginning at 5 p.m. Haling said participants can pick up their registration packets at that time and request a refund. He said everyone will receive an event t-shirt, whether they want their money back or not.

The Tinman Triathlon is put on each year as Dunsmuir Rotary Club's major fundraiser.
