CHAMPAIGN -- Illinois hired Jon Tenuta as the defensive coordinator Tuesday, and he was joined by offensive line coach Luke Butkus and Chris Beatty, who will serve as an offensive assistant.

They were already working on recruiting for the Illini, teaming up with recruiting coordinator Alex Golesh and defensive assistant Mike Ward.

The Illini have three more slots to fill, and speculation remained hot with LSU assistant Billy Gonzales as the offensive coordinator. Illini coach Tim Beckman hinted to parents during a meeting last week that the offensive coordinator wouldn't be hired until after the college championship game Monday.

Tenuta was inside linebackers coach at North Carolina State last season after stints with Ohio State, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech. Beatty worked last season at Vanderbilt. Butkus, a former Illini center and the nephew of Dick Butkus, served as an assistant offensive line coach with the Seattle Seahawks.
