An unidentified man pulled his flaming pickup truck into a California Avenue parking lot, got out and decided to run away without calling 911, leading police on a manhunt.
The ponytailed man had a blue Patriots hat and blue shirt and gripped a cell phone in each hand as he exited his burning red truck in the parking lot of a Bose Customer Service building a little after 5 p.m. today.
The was approached by a representative of Bose before he fled toward Rte. 9. Bose workers declined comment.
As of 7 p.m., police were searching for the man and could not say why he had run off. "It's a strange one," said Police Lt. Paul Shastany.
Firefighters at the parking lot said they did not want to speculate on the cause of the fire.
By the time fire personnel responded, the pickup was fully engulfed.
After dragging hoses through the manicured lawn and a small flower bed to hook up to a nearby fire hydrant, firefighters doused the pickup for about 10 minutes.
They then struck the hood of the truck with an axe.
A handful of Bose employees gathered across the street to gawk at the fire. Police did not close California Avenue to traffic.
The fire totaled the truck, melting away the tires, charring the exterior body of the vehicle, and turning the dashboard into a steaming mash of useless electronics.
