A registered sex offender was caught with child pornography he allegedly downloaded and printed at a public library.

An Adrian Public Library library official reported finding child pornography in a printer connected to computers used by the public, said Detective Vincent Emrick of the Adrian Police Department.

When he and another detective stopped at the library a week later, Emrick said, they bumped into the suspect, Richard Gordon Shelters, 65, as he was leaving with child pornography that had just been printed from a public computer.

“He was actually there and he was picking up material from the printer and walking out the door as we were coming in,” Emrick said.

A library official signaled them that the man they were passing in the doorway was the child pornography suspect, he said. Shelters was stopped and the nine pages of paper he was holding had photographs of children that Emrick estimated to be 6 to 12 years of age.

Shelters is a registered as a sex offender due to convictions for child sex offenses in Washtenaw County in 1986 and 1994.

He was arraigned Wednesday in Lenawee County District Court on a felony charge of possessing child pornography. He remains in jail while awaiting a July 12 preliminary examination after failing to post a $10,000 bond.
